In 1982, several avid amateur historians established the East Lycoming Historical Society to encourage the preservation of artifacts, written, pictorial, and oral history of the two boroughs and seven townships in Eastern Lycoming County.
In October 2007, ELHS received the donation of the building from George and Pauline Montgomery. The 1850's structure was erected by the first Lutheran congregation in Hughesville. Later, it became the Boak Brothers company store; then pharmacies under the surnames of Arnold, Stavings, and Montgomery.
Today, the East Lycoming Historical Society operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which offers free admission to the museum and community programs. The museum operates solely on monies from annual dues, generous donations from the members, and fundraising opportunities such as the annual Raise the Region event that is hosted by the First Community Partnership Foundation.
The museum is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm from April to December as well as other times by appointment. The museum is staffed during these times by volunteers who love to share the history of the eastern Lycoming County area. Each year, the museum hosts tours for students from Hughesville High School's Local History class. In addition, the museum offers educational programs in February, April, June, September, and November. As with the museum, these programs are free to anyone who wants to learn about local history.
Some highlights from the museum include a collection of Kathryn Fetter's paintings and other art work. Kathryn was an Art Teacher in the East Lycoming School District. Local historians have gathered a great deal of information regarding the one-room schools and local manufacturing industries. The museum also houses a large collection of artifacts, pictures, written information, and memorabilia of the Williamsport & North Branch Railroad. During the holiday season, the museum hosts a Polar Express display for children of all ages in the East Lycoming and surrounding areas.
