  • Get actively involved in what we do as a volunteer! This could be helping with our programming, being a Sentinel for a part of our watershed, collecting water samples, helping with fundraising, etc. The first step is telling us about you and your interests in our Susquehanna Survey.
  • Check out our extensive Riverkeeper blog feed, showcasing hundreds of articles, investigative stories and other educational pieces on local research, opportunities and information you should know about our river and greater watershed.
  • We officially passed our 100th Middle Susquehanna Podcast episode this past year and continue adding more, chatting with all types of people about their passion for our river and how we can make a difference. Check out our podcasts here.
  • The Vernal School Environmental Education Partnership has greatly boosted programming at the Montour Preserve over the past year, as well as tackling numerous major deferred projects and other upgrades. Check out an e-magazine report of our impacts and programs and visit the Vernal School site for upcoming programs.

  • We have mindfully expanded our regional presence within the 11,000-square-mile watershed we serve with Regional Directors in the West Branch, Northern Tier and soon the North Branch.
  • This past year in May, our board president, Michael Kinney and his fiancé, Missy Gray, paddled the full 228 miles of the West Branch of the Susquehanna. You can check out images and updates from their adventure here. They captured incredible video of the experience that Michael turned into a feature-length film called "Old River" that he shared at the Campus Theatre this past fall.
  • On that trip, Michael took a mobile version of our Birdnet unit that recorded, IDed and uploaded more than 22,000 bird calls connected to 170 different species. Board member Eric Belfanti collected the data in this cool GIS map that will help spark Phase 2 of our Birdnet project.
  • Years worth of legal work with several other agencies on advocacy for the Eastern hellbender led to the US Fish and Wildlife Service prosing protections for the species in December.  We created a special e-magazine to raise awareness.
  • We expanded our popular HERYN program kayaking and fishing day camps to West Branch and Northern Tier sites. Registration for 2025 dates in Union County will open on March 12. Learn more about the program here.
  • We are gearing up for a new slate of Floating Classrooms aboard the Hiawatha Paddleboat in Williamsport about a wide range of river-related topics. Check out what we have planned so far and get involved here.
  • We continued our quarterly surface water sampling program in the Montour County with results shared online.
  • We helped a citizen pollution report in Union County make it through the proper channels to investigation and mitigation.
  • Check out our special Songs of the Susquehanna project, entering its fifth year with a special Greatest Hits album.

Who We Are

We strive to protect and promote the health and vibrancy of the Susquehanna River, its tributaries and the aquatic resources it sustains across 11,000 square miles of watershed carved out by the West and North branches in central, northcentral and northeast Pennsylvania. Our goal is to re-engage the next generation of potential outdoors lovers and conservationists by providing programs that demonstrate the therapeutic aspects of our many natural resources.
