DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION - WELLSBORO CHAPTER
We are a society founded on service, that promotes Patriotism, education and preservation of American History, with this being done through community service and programs of outreach. omoting patriotism, preserving American history,
The Daughters of the American Revolution is a very large organization founded on service, with States, Districts and Chapters. We are a very small Chapter that strives to serve our local veterans and military. We do support State restorations of historic values, such as the State's restoration of Old Swedes Cemetery where John Morton (an original signer of the Declaration of Independence) is laid to rest in Chester, PA. We have desired to find and claim back some of the forgotten cemeteries, that are the final resting places of veterans from then and newer in our own community.
Presently, one of our ongoing projects is that we have designed and made Christmas cards that are sent with packages for "Goodies for our Troops". It is a long process that starts as early as April to accomplish the need by October and November to have them complete. Also, some of the cards are retained and sent at Christmas to local veterans who have been very appreciative of receiving them. Veterans day cards are also purchased and sent out for Veterans day. We would love to expand and send even more of both, to show our deep gratitude. We work exclusively with Local photographer, Linda Stager, using her pictures for the cards.
One of our greatest endeavors has been to honor veterans in some fashion. Our June picnic is the basis of having a veteran guest of honor. We celebrated 102 year old Dr. Robert Bair at such an event. We purchased a flag and case that was engraved as a presentation to him. The Honor guard was present to do a flag folding, inserting the flag into the case and presenting it to Dr Bair, who was overwhelmed with emotion, a gift he said, with tears in his eyes, would be on his mantle forever.
Last year we honored the Tioga County Honor Guard, who serve the community at funerals, military functions. and events such as our picnics. Thirteen members were recognized along with having our State Representative come to hand out medallions designed by our Chapter, acknowledging their impressive service to the general public. All are veterans from different eras of service. It is our desire to expand our picnic and bring more veterans to be recognized. A great deal of planning goes into it, but so gratifying to see the faces of our modern day patriots.
Our Chapter also supports other means that are directly for the veterans, such as Wreaths Across America. We help to secure the number of wreaths needed to cover the Wellsboro Cemetery and volunteer to help place the wreaths.
Anything our Chapter can do to pay tribute to veterans and help sustain our current military is an endeavor we strive to accomplish, now and through our future within the community. We hope to establish a connection to those who came before us, lest we forget our roots and to hold those who protect us now is the highest regard.
