I love the Central PA Food Bank! 

The idea we have neighbors who are literally going without food is so disturbing to me. Let’s make sure people’s basic needs to be able to live are met as the starting point of our responsibility to one another. Seniors who have worked their whole lives and have to skip meals in their last years should simply be unacceptable in a caring community! Child food insecurity rates are shameful in our area: one in five kids are living without adequate access to food! 

When you give to the Central PA Food Bank, you directly address that problem. The food bank and its partners provided more than 8.6 million meals across the Raise the Region area. The food is healthy too, with almost 1/3 of that being fresh produce! 

I have lived in Williamsport for 15 years, and my work as an anthropologist is related to food, but before that I worked in the restaurant industry, and at times faced food insecurity myself. I personally know neighbors who have sometimes needed help finding food. It can happen to anyone! 

Unfortunately, the rates of food insecurity and outright hunger are rising. The current levels are at a crisis that is as bad as things were during the pandemic. There are credible reports that the federal government is cutting over $1 billion in programs supporting food banks, so we will have to try to patch the gaps from private donations. There has never been a more important time to donate! 

Raise the region is a 30-hour on-line giving challenge from 6pm on March 12 to midnight on March 13 to celebrate the generosity of our community, so join the movement by contributing to my fundraiser today! My personal goal is to raise $5,000 for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. This is more than I've ever attempted, and I'm nervous. I hope my friends and family come through with support!
