At the Uptown Music Collective, every student has a unique story, from their introduction to music to their first experience with the UMC, the bonds they form with their peers and their growth as a musician and young adult. UMC staff and teachers appreciate the personal journeys of its young musicians and recognize the importance of being a positive force in the lives of today's youth. 

Caiden Scarfo first learned about the Collective when he saw a video of an alumni on Facebook who was layering instrument recordings together. Thinking it was "really cool," he decided to sign up at the UMC. 

He has learned a valuable lesson in his time at the Uptown Music Collective that will certainly have an impact on his future.

"Making mistakes is a part of music. This is something I was afraid of and sometimes still am. But it is a part of your journey and it drives you to continue to get better and learn from your mistakes. Pursuing your passion is something you should never not do and it shows that you are independent and have a goal for yourself."

Mackenzie Hakes appreciates the important life skills she has learned at the Collective, too. 

"While I have no particular interest in becoming a professional musician, the Collective has taught me a lot more than how to play music. I have learned the importance of time management, self-discipline, leadership, and other skills, which I believe will stick with me for the rest of my life. The other thing would be the amazing friendships I have made and all the amazing people I have met that I will never forget. The people I get to play with every weekend are the people I will continue to love for the rest of my life."

And for others, it truly is all about the music. Rowan Alamy has found that looking up to her older peers has been inspiring for her personal journey toward meeting her goals. 

"One of the most memorable moments for me at the Uptown Music Collective was auditioning and getting into the Special Performance Group. I had always admired the incredible talent on stage, especially after watching my step-brother perform in it. The energy, the skill, the way everyone came together — it was so inspiring. I remember thinking how much I wanted to be a part of it one day, and when I finally made it into the group, it felt like a huge accomplishment. It was a dream come true, and it motivated me to keep pushing myself as a musician." 

Tixo Bower is excited for what all of this means for those who follow in his footsteps. 

"Uptown always pushes you to be better and build a legacy that the following generations can look up to."
